"Empowering Through Football and Storytelling: Breaking Barriers, Building Futures."

Every young person needs the tools to help them when life and health challenges arise. Unfortunately, many children and adolescents, are still particularly vulnerable. They are exposed to preventable diseases like HIV/AIDS…, victims of sexual abuse, and Gender-Based Violence with some experiencing undesirable pregnancies and early marriage as a result, they are often targeted for Child Soldiers recruitment. These young people lack the knowledge and support systems to protect themselves.

That’s why we are using the power of Football – the beautiful game, and storytelling, as tools to empower adolescents with a resilient mind, life-saving health information and services to prevent diseases, sexual abuse, and GBVs, child soldier enrollment, promote mental health, education, and empower them to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

Letter from the CEO

Thick Green Straight Single Marker Line

Dear Supporters and Friends of Fobeworld,

I am thrilled to share with you the remarkable impact we have achieved through our soccer-based social change program. At Fobeworld, we believe in the transformative power of football and storytelling to empower youth and create lasting change in their lives and communities.

Our program is designed to address critical issues such as sexual abuse, HIV/AIDS and STIs prevention, and mental health improvement. Through engaging with these topics in a safe and supportive environment, youth are not only gaining valuable knowledge but also developing essential life skills and resilience.

One of the most rewarding aspects of our program is seeing youth discover a sense of possibility and belief in their potential to rise above their circumstances. By providing them with the tools and support they need to succeed, we are breaking the cycle of violence, poverty, and abuse, enabling them to thrive and flourish.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters. Your unwavering commitment to our mission is truly inspiring and drives us to continue our work with even greater passion and determination.

The Challenge

Thick Green Straight Single Marker Line

By 2050, sub-Saharan Africa is projected to have more adolescents than any other region, with increased conflict risk. Many youth may lack access to education, facing nearly 10 times the risk of death as their peers in high-income countries (WHO). This lack of education, coupled with other challenges, such as early marriage and conflict exposure, can exacerbate their vulnerabilities.

Education:

In many parts of Africa, access to quality education is limited, especially for marginalized youth.

Lack of resources and infrastructure hinders educational opportunities for many children.

Girls often face additional barriers to education, such as early marriage and societal expectations.

Health:

Health disparities are pronounced, with African adolescents facing higher risks of death and disease compared to their peers in high-income countries.

HIV/AIDS remains a leading cause of death among adolescents in Africa, highlighting the need for comprehensive sexual education and access to healthcare services.

Mental health conditions are prevalent but often overlooked, with limited resources available for mental health care.

Gender-Based

Violence (GBV):

GBV, including sexual violence, is a pervasive issue affecting many adolescent girls in Africa.

The actual prevalence of GBV is likely much higher than reported, due to underreporting and stigma.

Child Soldiers:

In conflict-affected areas, many children are recruited as child soldiers, depriving them of their childhood and education.

The impact of armed conflict on children's mental health and well-being is profound, leading to long-term consequences.

Equipping Adolescents with the Support and Skills for Improved Mental Health

Mental health is crucial for adolescents' overall well-being, especially given the challenges they face, such as lacking access to education and the risk of being enrolled as child soldiers. Mental health impacts other critical health issues like sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and HIV/AIDS.

As part of its integrated approach to reaching adolescents, Fobeworld is dedicated to improving the mental health and well-being of young people in communities at heightened risk. Drawing on partnerships with leading and government institutions, Fobeworld launched a comprehensive mental health initiative in 2023.

This initiative aims to address the growing global adolescent mental health crisis by focusing on building a resilient mind, maintaining a healthy body, and fostering a strong support network. It is informed by input from world-leading mental health professionals, ensuring that Fobeworld's model is effective and impactful in improving young people's mental health and well-being.
